Digestive Organs

Recommended for:Medical students (1.5 hours / session One session / week 15 weeks / term)

Course Overview

This course features 12 sessions of lectures on the digestive system, the basics of diagnosis and treatment of illnesses in the digestive system, and recent developments in the field.

Key Features

The field of clinical medicine can be divided into many sections, each connected with a particular organ in the body. In case of a particular illness- gastric tumor, for instance- an internal medicines instructor first teaches internal diagnosis and treatment, and then a surgical instructor teaches the surgical counterpart. By combining both internal and surgical lectures, the students are better able to understand the illness and ways to cure it. As for my part, in the course of the lesson I first teach the basic properties of the field, ones that have already been confirmed, then move on to more advanced, more recent information( which will not be tested), and try to make the lesson as close to clinical as possible.

Course Aims

After this course, all of you will begin your medical training. This course provides the basics for the rapidly developing diagnosis and treatment technologies that you are about to see in a real medical institution. They will become a necessity in future medical treatments, so I would suggest that you study well in these lessons.

Contents

  1. Outline of the digestive system, diseases of the upper digestive system
    • First, we will do a brief overview of the digestive system as a whole. Then there will be a lecture on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), chronic stomach inflammation, and malignant tumors like esophageal or gastric cancer.
    • Keywords: GERD, digestive ulcers, H.Pylori, Esophageal cancer, Gastric cancer

  2. Surgery of the upper digestive system
    • A large part of the diseases in the upper digestive system are either esophageal or gastric cancer. We will focus primarily on surgical and supplementary treatment.
    • Keywords: Esophageal cancer, Gastric cancer, surgery under an endoscope, supplementary treatment

  3. Diseases of the lower digestive system
    • The main points of this lesson are the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory and malignant tumors in the lower digestive system.
    • Keywords: Colon cancer, Colon inflammation, Crohn's disease

  4. Acute gastroenterology symptoms, surgery of the lower digestive system
    • We will go through the basic concepts of acute gastric symptoms, their diagnosis and treatment, and surgery of the lower digestive system.
    • Keywords: Peritoneum stimuli, Acute appendicitis, Volvulus, Removing of the colon

  5. Endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the digestive system
    • In this lesson we will learn some of the methods of diagnosis and treatment of gastroenterology diseases by means of an endoscope, focusing primarily on cancers.
    • Keywords: Endoscopic diagnosis of digestive tumors, Endoscopic submucosal dissection

  6. Laparoscopic surgery of the digestive system
    • We will lecture on laparoscopic surgery, its adaptations, methods, and its complications.
    • Keywords: Laparoscopic surgery, cholecystectomy splenectomy, minilaparotomy

  7. Liver disease
    • We'll discuss some of the more common forms of liver disease. We aim to better understand some main aspects of liver disease which differ from other organs (cf. symptoms of liver failure, drug-related liver damage).
    • Keywords: Viral liver damage, Self-immune liver damage, Alcohol-related liver damage, Drug-related liver damage, Liver cancer

  8. Liver surgery
    • We'll lecture on treatment (invasive, non-invasive) of liver diseases.
    • Keywords: Hepatectomy, Transcatheter arterial emblization, Primary liver cancer, Metastatic liver cancer

  9. Visual Diagnosis
    • In this lesson, we will explain diagnosis methods using visual imaging methods.
    • Keywords: Clinical surgery, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary, Endoscopic imaging, Computer tomography (CT), Ultrasonography(US)

  10. Pancreatic diseases
    • We'll discuss the basics of acute/chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic secreteory cancers, and also their symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
    • Keywords: Acute pancretitis, Chronic pancretitis, Pancreatic cancer, Pancreatic secreteory cancer

  11. Bile Duct Surgery
    • We'll lecture on local surgical dissection of the bile duct, gallstones and treatment of its complications, diagnosis of bile duct cancer development and surgical treatment methods.
    • Keywords: Type of Gallstones, Acute obstructive supprurative cholangiitis, Pulmonary emphysema, Cholangioma, Gallbladder cancer

  12. Pancreatic surgery
    • We'll discuss local surgical dissection of pancreatic diseases, surgery of acute/chronic pancreatitis, diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and methods of surgical treatment.
