2001.04 The Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced its OpenCourseWare (OCW) initiative in The New York Times .

2004.11.5 The Japan OpenCourseWare Workshop was held at Keio University, with an invitation to join the International OpenCourseWare Consortium (now known as Open Education Global (OEG)).
Osaka University, Kyoto University, Keio University, the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Waseda University, Nagoya University, Kyushu University, Hokkaido University, and Tohoku University participated.
2005.05 The Japan OCW Liaison Committee—now known as Open Education Japan (OE Japan)—was established by Osaka University, Kyoto University, Keio University, the University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Waseda University.
Although Nagoya University considered it premature to join at that time, it formed the Nagoya University OpenCourseWare (NUOCW) Committee to explore future participation.
2005.08 Recognizing the significance of making lectures publicly accessible, the Nagoya University OpenCourseWare (NUOCW) Committee selected and finalized 25 courses to be released, involving 25 faculty members.
2005.10 A prototype website featuring ten courses was created. At the Board of Trustees meeting, the decision was made for Nagoya University to join the International OpenCourseWare Consortium.
2005.11 Internal release of the “NUOCW” site commenced.
2005.12.21 President Shin’ichi Hirano (then) formally approved Nagoya University’s participation in the International OpenCourseWare Consortium.
2005.12.27 The NUOCW website was officially launched, and its release was announced to the media at a press briefing for education journalists.
2009.12.01 The booklet “NUOCW — Nagoya University OpenCourseWare” was published.
2019.11.25 UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) adopted the Recommendation on Open Educational Resources (OER).
2020.06.23 The new Japanese version of the NUOCW website was launched, featuring a redesigned layout and updated operational system.
2025.12 A special website commemorating the 20th anniversary of NUOCW was launched.
2026 MIT OpenCourseWare—the world’s first OCW—celebrated its 25th anniversary.
